Fishing is one of our favorite outdoor recreation activities at Black’s Fork River Lodge.  The Black’s Fork River is a great fishery that runs right through the property.  There is also a beautiful fishing pond on the property and many high mountain lakes in the Uinta Mountains just up the road from the lodge.  It is a great area to fish any time of the year and has great access to amazing fishing on the Utah/Wyoming border.  In this blog we will share our favorite flies to use while fly fishing in Utah and Wyoming.  Here are the top five flies we recommend to catch trout in these two great fly fishing states.

One of our favorite flies year-round is the spanish bullet perdigon.  This versatile nymph is a great fly for imitating midges and caddis larvae.  Midges are a staple of a trout’s diet and trout eat them consistently year-round.  Trout eat midge and caddis larvae on a daily basis that bounce along the bottom of the river.  Fishing a spanish bullet perdigon under a dry fly or a strike indicator in deeper water is a great way to catch trout.  In deep or fast water a large weight about 24 inches from the nymph can be used to get the nymph down to the bottom of the river where trout are feeding on midge and caddis larvae.

The second fly that we fish year-round in Utah and Wyoming is the purple Adams.  This variation of the parachute Adams is a great dry fly any time of the year.  In smaller sizes the purple Adams is a great adult midge imitation and in larger sizes it is a great pattern for catching trout during mayfly hatches in the spring and summer.  The purple parachute Adams is a great fly in a variety of water types including: ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, and backwater pools.  This is one of the most versatile flies to have in your box while fishing in Utah and Wyoming.

Woolly buggers are one of the most versatile flies to fish in Utah and Wyoming year-round.  They work great to imitate leeches, baitfish, crayfish, damselfly nymphs, and stonefly nymphs.  During the winter months woolly buggers are great to use in black and brown to imitate crayfish, leeches, and baitfish.  During the spring months an olive woolly bugger in smaller sizes is a great damselfly imitation.  In the summer a black or brown woolly bugger with rubberlegs is a great stonefly imitation.

During the colder times of the year trout feed heavily on small midges in rivers, lakes, and ponds.  Zebra midges are great flies for imitating these small midges that trout eat daily most of the year.  The most versatile color of zebra midge is a black and silver midge.  This pattern works in most water bodies year-round.  Red and brown midges are also effective in many situations.  A sno cone midge with a white bead and red and black ribbing is a very effective pattern in ponds and lakes in the fall and spring.

A parachute madam X is a great dry fly to fish in Utah and Wyoming during the warmer months of the year.  In smaller sizes this fly is a great imitation for caddis.  In larger sizes the parachute madam X is a great fly to use to imitate stoneflies and hoppers in the fall months.  The PMX is a great fly to use on rivers, ponds, and lakes from June to October in Utah and Wyoming.

These five flies are the best flies to have in your box while fishing in Utah and Wyoming.  We hope to see you out on the river catching trout in our neck of the woods soon!
